What’s New in GroupMe: Back to School

Sep 23, 2024

With the end of brat summer and the rise of demure fall, school is back in session, and we are honored to welcome a record number of new students to GroupMe! More people than ever are using GroupMe to connect with classmates, sports teams, clubs, fantasy leagues, and countless other communities in high school, college, and beyond.

Every update we make to GroupMe is based on feedback from this community. Over the past few months…

  • We launched GroupMe Campus to help college students form meaningful connections with their classmates, discover new student groups, and learn about events around campus. Over 70% of US colleges are now using GroupMe and new Campus group creation has surged over 200%!

  • We leveled up your chat experience by bringing in message reactions, 1-1 and group calling, link previews, a new polls experience, and a whole lot more.

  • We refreshed events in GroupMe and made them shareable with anyone, even people that aren’t part of your GroupMe.

  • We released 1,000+ other updates and bug fixes to make GroupMe faster, more intuitive and a better overall experience for our users.

And we’re just getting started.

Introducing: Announcement Topics and more Social Sharing

Last year we released Topics (aka a group chat inside your group chat) because group leaders told us they wanted a better way to organize discussions with their community. Today we’re releasing Announcement Topics, a new way to ensure that important messages rise above the noise. In an Announcement Topic, everyone can react to messages and RSVP to events but only group leaders can post. Group leaders can also create Announcement groups or convert any existing Topic to an Announcement Topic.

We’re also making it easier for you to share your GroupMe groups and events with your people. Thousands of new groups and events are created every day on GroupMe, and now you can invite your friends by sharing directly to Instagram, your WhatsApp group, or your Snap story!

Over the next few weeks we’ll also be releasing several additional highly requested updates to GroupMe, including the ability to edit messages, improvements to events, and much more.

GroupMe 💙 Community

We are so inspired to hear about the meaningful ways this community is using GroupMe. This summer Symbiosis University in India launched GroupMe Campus and thousands of students are connecting with each other, sharing events, and making new friends. Voto Latino uses GroupMe to connect with and help Latino students register to vote. Students at the University of Southern California use GroupMe to help students ensure they have a safe way to get home at night. People have even met their spouse on GroupMe! These are the stories that motivate us to continue making GroupMe better than ever.

Stay tuned for several more improvements to GroupMe over the coming months!
