Celebrating 15 years of GroupMe with our best update ever

Sep 30, 2025

GroupMe just turned 15. That’s 15 years of group chats that sparked friendships, planned meetups, launched study sessions, organized teams, and kept families close.

To build upon this milestone, we’re rolling out one of our most community-driven updates yet. Every feature in this release was shaped by real feedback from the people who use GroupMe every day. You told us what felt clunky, what needed more personality, and what would make your group chats even better.

We listened. We built. Now we’re handing it back to you.

Here’s what’s new, what’s better, and what’s about to become your group’s new favorite thing.

Expanded Reactions: All the emoji you love, plus some GroupMe originals…

Reactions are no longer limited to the sacred 16. Now, you can respond with any emoji your heart desires and for the OGs out there, we’ve added a set of exclusive GroupMe designed emojis. If you haven’t seen them yet, go take a look. Just a heads-up: some of them are delightfully wacky. You’ve been warned.

Shared Albums: Capture and organize the moments when your group makes it out of the group chat

Say goodbye to endless scrolling and chaotic photo dumps. With Shared Albums, you can now create dedicated spaces for your group’s best moments. Add photos without flooding the chat, invite others with a link, and relive the memories together. It’s nostalgia, curated.

Available on iOS, coming soon to Android

Chat Redesign: Refreshed, modern, and built for flow

We rebuilt the chat from the ground up. Every message, every tap, every scroll. The new design is clean, intuitive, and unmistakably GroupMe. It’s the kind of refresh that feels like it’s always been there. Effortless to use, beautiful to look at, and ready for whatever your group throws at it.

Chat Summaries: TLDR, that's the TLDR

Missed the chaos? We’ve got you. Chat Summaries give you a digest of what actually happened. Not just a transcript, but a recap of key moments, decisions, and themes. And it’s written in a tone that matches your group’s personality. Whether your crew is chaotic-neutral or spreadsheet-serious, the summary speaks your language.

The Chat Summary feature is rolling out now via the latest app update on both iOS and Android

Improved Media Performance: Faster, smoother, better

No one likes waiting. So, we made media uploads faster, playback smoother, and performance snappier across the board. Whether you’re dropping a video from last night or scrolling through memes, it’s all just quicker. GroupMe now uploads media at an exponentially higher resolution than before, so your photos and videos look sharper, clearer, and way more true to life.

Thank you for continuing to make GroupMe a world-class chat app. Your feedback drives everything we build, so let us know what you think of the latest release we're listening.
